Room 6 are doing technology this term. They are working together in groups to complete STEM (Science, technology, engineering, maths) challenges. They will all get to do each activity over the next few weeks. Here are some photos from their first week.

Technology By Ana
Technology isn't all about electricity and electric power. Technology is something that has a purpose. For example… Sunscreen. Its purpose is to keep our skin protected from the sun. At school we have boring dark blue hats with words Grey Lynn primary school, at the front. Our two technology teachers (Sandie and Kerry) Were thinking over the holidays What to do for technology. Eventually they came across to hats and realised how lots of kids complain on how boring our hats are, then decided that it would be a cool idea to make our own hats, and so we are. Every team is taking part in it. Including Puriri, Kowhai and Totara. Our design brief was to design a hat that would be good for a 7-11 year old child. It had to be cool in summer, warm in winter and most importantly sun safe.We started with researching different hats. Looking at their purpose and what they were made of.We chose which hats to research and decided what we were interested in. Then we began our design. It could be made up, be exactly like one hat or taken from different parts and different types of hats then made into one. Most Kids have been starting to make their hat and more importantly started to let their imagination run wild during school! Technology has been so much fun so far, and I can't wait to see what everyone’s finished products look like!

Hat Brief
Most technology classes this term have been given a brief where they need to design and make a hat that is suitable for a 7-11 year old, sun-safe as well as keeping warm in colder conditions and be fashionable.
Year 2 children are focussing on a hat that will be sun-safe and look good.
We discussed how all designers do some research (finding out), before beginning their own designs. Research gives us ideas and informs us on what may work well or what materials work etc.
Our research involved looking at a range of hats and discussing their purpose, what it was made from and why. Some classes have also used the computers to research specific types of hats that they wanted to find out about.
Once the research has been done the design process can begin and children are drawing their own hat design, thinking about what materials they will use and how they will go about it.
The making process will involve a lot of trial and error, problem solving, learning from each other and reflection throughout.

Room 14's ideas of What Technology is
Room 14 had the challenge to brainstorm 'What is Technology ?'
They cam up with lots of different ideas. Here is a selection of what they came up with.

Room 8 investigated all types of hats.
We are looking at all types of hats and talking about who would wear a particular hat and what the hat's purpose is. We then looked at the Grey Lynn School hat and decided it was made from cotton. We decided that a good sunhat needs -
to protect your head, face, ears and neck. It needs a brim around the hat, to be soft and comfortable as well as looking cool and attractive. It should not be too hot on your head.

Room 4 & 8
Room 4 & 8 had to brainstorm what we thought technology was. We watched a video of the story Stuck. This was followed by a discussion on what was natural and what was man made. We had to work in groups and decide which items were man made & which items were natural.

Week One Technology Classes
First week back at school and our Grey Lynn Techies have been hard at work. This week we had to work together in groups and brainstorm what we thought Technology was. Then we had to present our findings any way we chose.
Here is Room 14 hard at work
